General Grocery Shopping

  - Safeway: Features a small kosher section.

  - Local Stores: Many standard products are kosher; you simply need to look for a reliable kosher symbol. Please note that an item must have an official certification symbol to be verified kosher. The most common acceptable symbols are OU, OK, Star-K, and Chof-K. You can view a full list of common acceptable kosher symbols here.

  - Western Kosher: Chabad of Hilo, together with Chabad of Kona, arranges a kosher shipment from Western Kosher, and anyone is welcome to join the order, making it easier to keep kosher on the island. For more information, please click here.

 

Wine, Grape Juice, and Bakery Items

  - Kosher Wine: Bartenura Moscato is available in the wine sections at both Target and Safeway. 

  -Kosher Grape Juice: Kedem Concord Grape Juice is available in the Safeway kosher section.

  - Kosher Challah: Safeway occasionally sells Laromme Challah, which is Pas Yisroel. Please note that Safeway's bakery-brand challah is not kosher.

  - Pas Yisroel Products:

      - Safeway: Signature Select bagels are available in the bakery area.

      - Target: Western Bagels are located in the refrigerated section next to the eggs, and various types of Izzio bread are available to the right upon entering the store.

     - Ezekiel Bread: Available at Island Naturals, Target, and Safeway

 

Kosher Fish

Kosher fish must have both fins and scales. When purchasing, ensure the skin is left on so the scales are visible. If buying pre-cut pieces, rinse the fish thoroughly in case the knife used was previously used for non-kosher fish. Meat and Dairy

  - Kosher Meat & Chalav Yisrael: Local stores do not carry these kosher meat & Chalav Yisrael dairy products. There are many kosher dairy products that are non Chalav Yisrael in the local stores.

However, you can join Chabad of Hilo's kosher order from Western Kosher. We also typically have ground beef, chicken legs, and chicken breasts available for purchase directly from us.
